SAINT HERMAN OF ALASKA is a canonized saint of the Russian Orthodox Church. Born in Russia about 1757, Saint Herman began the monastic path at the age of twelve. In 1793, a group of missionaries went out from the Valaam Monastery in Russia to Alaska. Saint Herman was one of these. A church and school were built in Kodiak and he worked and taught there.
Later St. Herman settled on Spruce Island, where he remained for forty years until his repose on December 13, 1837.
